Kildare’s U16 Development Camogie team produced a determined and skilful display to capture All-Ireland honours with a deserved 1-10 to 0-07 victory over Meath in St Laurence’s GAA grounds, Narraghmore, on Saturday 25th April.

Played in glorious sunshine, the conditions were ideal for camogie, and the Lilywhites rose to the occasion with an outstanding team performance from start to finish.

The success marked the culmination of months of hard work and preparation. Since last October, the panel had trained tirelessly through difficult winter evenings, building the fitness, stamina and resilience that proved so important throughout the campaign. Training alongside the U16 championship squad also helped raise standards, with players constantly pushing one another and improving their overall skill levels.

Kildare entered the final following strong victories over Laois and Carlow and quickly settled into the decider against a talented Meath side. Meath opened the scoring, but Kildare soon found their rhythm and began to take control of the contest.

Playing with the aid of the breeze in the opening half, Kildare started to dominate possession and scoring opportunities. Eloise McConn converted a number of important frees during a strong spell for the Lilywhites, while the team’s work rate and movement all over the field helped Kildare establish a 0-6 to 0-2 lead by the 18th minute.

Kildare continued to attack with confidence and intensity. Muireann McDermott and Niamh O’Rourke both added fine scores from play before the interval leaving it Kildare 0-8 to 0-4 at the break.

Meath emerged strongly in the second half and attempted to force their way back into contention, but Kildare continued to show tremendous determination around the middle third and maintained a high tempo throughout. Strong defending and tireless work throughout the field ensured the Lilywhites continued to hold the upper hand.

The decisive moment of the contest arrived in the 44th minute when substitute Emma Monaghan struck for the game’s only goal. Attacking the pavilion end, Monaghan reacted quickest, striking the ball before the 21-line mark which finished brilliantly in the back of the net, pushing Kildare into an eight-point lead and sparking huge celebrations among the home support.

To their credit, Meath continued to battle and added further scores during the closing stages. However, Kildare remained composed under pressure, with goalkeeper Olivia Warren producing several crucial saves late in the game to deny Meath any route back into the contest.

Kildare’s victory was built on an outstanding collective effort across the field, with every player making an important contribution throughout the campaign and in the final itself. The teamwork, commitment and determination shown by the panel were central to securing the All-Ireland title.

Player of the Match: Eloise McConn (Kildare), who contributed important scores throughout.
